Here is the progress of the custom cabinets for our new kitchen, mudroom and main bathroom!
Note that they are primed with white but not yet painted with the finished paint color! Spoiler alert it’s also white.
Conway Custom Woodwork
We were very excited to work with our friend Mike Conway, who owns Conway Custom Woodwork, for all the cabinets in our house. Mike and Luke (who works with Mike) have been friends of Thomas for years. They have wonderful craftsmanship and we are so happy!
Last week our kitchen, mud room and main bathroom cabinets were all installed. Here are some plans before + progression!
Custom cabinets: the kitchen
Before
Day of arrival
It was so exciting to see them in person! My only request: give me as many drawers as possible 🙂
Installation week
Our kitchen doesn’t have a ton of upper cabinets, so I was a little nervous what the ones we have would look like. But with the hood and the “weight” on this side of the room, it’s well balanced! They look so good in person.
Primed, unpainted
The cabinets arrived primed and the paint arrived the following week. I’ll save that for the next post!
The island enters!
All drawers on the island!!
The microwave will go in this locker. On the back wall, 3 upper cabinets remain to be installed.
Design
Our architect, Ruth Ellen Outlaw, did most of the kitchen design. We’ve tweaked the bin/recycling and a few things, but she’s got most of the drawers + cabinets covered! I can’t wait to move in and show you how we organize them.
This wall will have two open shelves! We ordered white oak shelves from Ultra Shelf.
Guys, don’t look so angry!
Personalized changing room
The locker room is underway! So pumped for this. The upper spaces will have cabinet doors. And the front has a trim frame that will also be installed.
The shoe areas below are open but will have a half shelf. We had a lot of dramatic shoe talk and I lost the battle to get drawers. Thomas was very keen not to bend over to open something and prefers his shoes to slide into a locker. I fear a cluttered look. So to be determined on how we solve this problem as time evolves and we live in space. Hope it looks neat enough!
Custom vanity: the bathroom
Our new bathroom wall is so wide that the custom was really the only way in here. And GASP – we decided not to paint it white. We opted for natural oak! I will soon have an article dedicated to vanity, but here is a preview!

So many wonderful drawers!!! The drawer fronts have not yet been installed, but the finished cabinet will all be the same color/finish.

The opposite point of view:
The shower tile is done!
tub liner
The tub has plank flooring and will have quartz on top to match the shower base and countertops. We are using our old tub!
And my father-in-law installed paneling (to be painted!) around the edge for a bit of interest. It will also have a garnish on top.
EasyClosets
Another area of wardrobe that I’m so glad I ordered is my custom closet!! I work with EasyClosets on a sponsored post in exchange for a closet system and we couldn’t be more excited for what’s to come on a truck in a few weeks:
I bought my old closet at EasyClosets in 2015 and loved it. Thomas will put my original wardrobe pieces in his new space (because he has about 25% more clothes than me!) and I get a new, bigger one.
I worked with one of the in-house designers, Zack, on the design. This process is included in the price, and Zack took the basic measurements I provided and some input from me on what I needed and created three different designs to choose from. Priorities: Lots of drawers, areas for short and long clothes, and plenty of shoe storage (all things I kinda missed in my old closet!). I can’t wait to show you how it goes!
kitchen accent wall
Another accent wall has been finished downstairs – the pantry wall! We didn’t have room for furniture or cabinets here, so we wanted to do something to keep it from being one massive, giant bare wall. Shiplap may come out, but woodwork never will.
Chimney
My father-in-law also finished trimming the new fireplace! It has such a modern feel compared to the old one that was there. We purchased a thick white oak fireplace from Ultra Shelf which will be installed soon.
Utility closet + pantry
The utility cupboard and pantry shelves were finished and painted.
Front door
And the front door is also ready to be painted! We go with stratton blue!
And finally, the exterior cladding is getting a paint job! There will be a low porch here one day…
A lot has happened since I took these photos, so stay tuned for another renovation post next week with the painting of our cabinets, counters and finishes!
