3. Breath training Breath training is helpful in affect regulation. When individuals are stressed, breathing may become shallower, and hyperventilation may occur. When clients can learn to breathe in a calm, efficient way, there is a relaxing effect on the body and autonomic nervous system. Breath training may involve having a client sit in a comfortable position with eyes closed (or using a “soft stare” by gazing at the floor) and begin to pay attention to the breath. A clinician might guide the client to breathe in and out for four to six counts, slowly and deeply. Practicing this for…

Research from Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago found that direct injection of neonatal mesenchymal stem cells, derived from heart tissue discarded during surgery, reduces intestinal inflammation and promotes wound healing in a mouse model of Crohn’s disease-like ileitis, an illness marked by chronic intestinal inflammation and progressive tissue damage. The study, published in the journal Advanced Therapeutics, offers a promising new and alternative treatment approach that avoids the pitfalls of current Crohn’s disease medications, including diminishing effectiveness, severe side effects and increased risk of gastrointestinal dysfunction. “Neonatal cardiac-derived mesenchymal stem cells have been used in a…

A gene that plays a key role in regulating how bodies change across the 24-hour day also influences memory formation, allowing mice to consolidate memories better during the day than at night. Researchers at Penn State tested the memory of mice during the day and at night, then identified genes whose activity fluctuated in a memory-related region of the brain in parallel with memory performance. Experiments showed that the gene, Period 1, which is known to be involved in the body’s circadian clock, is crucial for improved daytime memory performance. The research demonstrates a link between the circadian system and…
The major parts of the lymphatic system are located deep inside the body, in organs like the liver and intestine. These organs generate 80-90% of the lymphatic flow into the main aqueduct of the lymphatic system: the thoracic duct. However, due to the very small size of the lymphatic vessels, their extreme complexity, and other factors, it’s difficult to image the “deep” or central lymphatic system. In recent years, new techniques have been developed which allow discovery of the pathophysiology of diseases such as genital lymphorrhea and swelling and pulmonary insufficiency in patients with lymphatic anomalies. Several interventional techniques were…
